No School Like the New School: Eddy Chan

Not many things have consumed more hours of my life than video games. Maybe eating, sleeping and breathing - but that's about it. As with most things that consume so much of my time, I tend to develop some favorites. Sushi or steak, 8 hours or more, and clean Calgary air are some examples. But that leaves us with the video games. Here are my Top Five Games of All Time and the Top Five I Am Most Looking Forward To.

Top 5 of All-Time

Quake 3 Rocket Arena

rocket-arena

Any fan of first person shooters will instantly relate to this one. The Quake franchise arguabaly INVENTED the FPS genre. THIS is how FPS games are SUPPOSE to be. This is the benchmark. I could put the entire series as my number 5 but the Rocket Arena mod for Quake 3 stands out above the rest. THIS is where I learned to rocket jump high above the map, pick off and unsuspecting enemy with the rail gun, and strafe jump across the map dodging and weaving enemy fire. THIS is where FPS champions were made, and without a doubt, THIS is where carpal tunnel developed.

Super Bomberman

Bomberman has a relatively simple concept. Blow people up, collect power ups, don't get blown up. That's it. It is with this simple charm that I was first introduced, and then hooked to Bomberman. My cousins and I use to spend hours upon hours trying to blow each other at this game. And it wasn't the bombs that made the loudest sound, it was the laughter. This is the most fun anybody should be allowed to have with a video game. My sides still hurt from 15 years ago.

F-Zero

fzero

I am a huge fan of racing games. The speed, exilaration, precision and competition in racing games are not easily matched. Nothing gets my blood pumping and adrenaline flowing quite like a good racing game. How did my love for the genre begin? F-Zero. I remember waking up as a little boy at 7am, in my PJ's, and playing F-Zero till I had to go to bed..still in my PJ's. Meals were skipped, school was missed, and bathroom breaks were sometimes done on the spot. All of it for the thrill. All of it worth it.

Worms

worms

My belief is that the only true way you can have multiplayer fun with your friends (or future enemies) is to play Worms. That's it. All those other times you THINK you're having fun playing other games; killing your friends, laughing it up - your wrong. Once you have invited some buddies over and played some Worms - your whole world changes. This game set the bar for local multiplayer fun; and the only way to reach that bar - is with a ninja rope.

Grand Theft Auto 3

gta3

This is the game that changed it all for me. This game made me realize what was actually possible in a video game. There were no boundaries. This was the first time I played a game where I could essentially do ANYTHING. This kind of openness and freedom was every gamers dream. I remember driving around for MONTHS doing whatever I pleased without even touching the story line, without really even playing the "game". A game so huge and open and creative that allows you to lose yourself for months at a time without even exposing you to the actual story has to be something special. This game INVENTED the word EPIC.

Top 5 Most Wanted

Starcraft 2

sc2-marine

To be honest I never even played the first Starcraft. Yes, I can already feel the imaginary rocks you have surely begun throwing at me. It was just never really my "thing". I'm not a huge fan of RTS's in general but something about Starcraft 2 has my heart racing. Could be the incredible hype, the incredible track record of Blizzard, or the simple fact that I "missed" the first one. Whatever the reason, I'm excited. And I won't be missing this the second time. Here - here's your rocks.

God of War 3

kratos

God of War 1 and 2 are some of the best games ever created. I am sure lot's of you probablly have them in YOUR Top 5; and they surely just missed a spot on mine. The fact that this is the first "new generation" GOW to be released has me extremely excited. The strange thing though is that I don't even own a PS3. If the screenshots and videos are any indication though, this could be the game that warrants that purchase. Hopefully for Sony, this game won't only sell me a brand new PS3, but a lot of other gamers as well.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

mw2

Another sequel makes the list. The first Modern Warfare is one of the best FPS games to come out in a long time. Even though Call of Duty: WAW has been released, MW is still one of the most played games on Xbox Live and PSN. If Infinity Ward can improve on an already winning formula, MW2 could become the best and most successful FPS of all time.

NHL '10

patrick-kane-cover-nhl-2010

I'm Canadian. Which automatically means that I love hockey. The two cannot be separated. It's science. The last year I have played more NHL 09 than any other game. With close to 1000 ranked online games and countless schooling's at my condo, under my belt, I'm ready for 10. Better practice up.

Scribblenauts

scribblenauts

This is the most innovative game to come in a long time. The idea that I can write practically ANYTHING, and the game will conjure it up, has me a little short of breath. Puzzles are solved with whatever you can think up and your only obstacle is your imagination? Yes please!
