Wok To The Future: Tron Legacy

Friday, August 21, 2009 at 5:00AM Who didn't watch the first Tron film in '80s and think "by the year 2000 we're pretty much going to be living in a video game." I know I did. It was one of the first (if not the first) films that incorporated a large amount of computer graphics and at the time video games were somewhat unknown to a lot of people. It was a big risk for Disney to take after it was shot down by Warner Bros, MGM and Columbia, but I think that we're all glad that they made the right choice to bring Steven Lisberger's vision to the big screen. Hence the anticipation for this film.
After a dropping some hints in the mail to a few of our fellow film bloggers, Disney led them on a scavenger hunt to the recreated Flynn's Arcade where they were shown this super slick trailer:
The movie looks like it might actually be a little dark, as Bridges (aka Flynn) almost smiles as his program avatar finishes off another program (or possibly a user) in the video. Maybe being stuck inside a Commodore 64 for almost 30 years has given him a bit of a God complex. Who knows.
To build a little more anticipation (as if they need it) and to fill in some of the gaps since the first Tron film, an online group aptly named "Flynn Lives" is trying to get to the bottom of Kevin Flynn's whereabouts. Their timeline states that he has been missing since 1989, but several of the ENCOM employees have been corresponding with him via "Usenet" since 1992. Which might explain the company's unexplained success. This type of online story sounds a lot like the Lost Experience and for good reason, since Lost writer Adam Horowitz co-wrote the screenplay with Richard Jefferies. Watch for a lot more online updates and storyline developments. This one could have some cool games involved.
Why this movie is going to Wok:
- It's Tron
- IMAX 3D
- Amazing Writers: Adam Horowitz & Richard Jefferies
- Daft Punk will be doing the score for the film. Insane, I know. Heres a little taste of the title track:
