Question of the Week: What Do You Think of Collectors' Editions?

Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at 4:30AM If you've been a gamer for a while, a little thing called the "Collectors Edition" probably won't be that foreign to you. These are the extra special editions of games where publishers bundle in extras or packages them in fancy boxes to entice buyers to pay extra cash for essentially the same item.
Most Collectors Editions tends to be a simple repackaging that throws in an extra mini-strategy guide or an art book. But somewhere along the line, Blizzard comes on the scene and throws down Collectors Editions worthy of legend. And this time, their Collectors Editions were actually limited in stock and fully numbered so it would make sense to collect one. If you don't believe me, search and see how much a World of Warcraft sealed Collectors Edition will cost on eBay and you'll understand.
On the other end of the spectrum, you get the Halo 3 Legendary Edition, which at first glance seems very awesome. A replica Spartan helmet that doubles as storage for your game and extra content, how could this not be a success? At $150 MSRP, Microsoft thought all Halo fanboys will want this piece of history so, in their infinite wisdom, they decided to produce over 300,000 of these, which in turn caused the market to be flooded with plastic Spartan helmets. Needless to say, retailers were less than happy to see their precious rack space taken up by this gigantic piece of junk that no one wanted. At its lowest point, you could have purchased the Legendary Edition for 50% less than the actual regular edition of the game by itself! Epic fail, Microsoft, epic fail.
So the question this week is, "What Do You Think of Collectors Editions?" Let us know, vote and leave a comment!

i had a big long post ( like i usually do) sounding off on this topic, but i hit 'send' before entering the CAPTCHA code so i lost it... here's truncated version:
- i'm a sucker for collectors editions- collection includes mgs 4 assasin's creed devil may cry 4 fallout 3 sf4 re5 god of war 2 final fantasy 12 the starcraft battle chest(technically not a collector's edition) - love the trinkets and art books, but agree that sometimes its not worth the price, eg. dmc4's terrible anime. on the other hand, fallout 3's bobble head/lunchbox/ art book bundle was awesome! i'm still looking for the limited edition with the pipboy alarm clock- price isn't an object most of the time. i have two of the medicom 12" big boss action figures that go for $300 to $400 and am seriously considering the mgs 4 line with old snake and raiden. - halo set was (grudgingly) cool at first, but the oversaturation of the product made it laughable only a few months later.- limited or individually numbered amounts can truly up the ante on these things, and make it feel that much more special to have them- if only i was into Wow, i'd be all over that set... but that's steep... and i'm not into WoW
i'm all for the collector's editions, i love my video game shwag!
