TV.com in Canada? You Bet!

tvcom-logoCBS launched a new iPhone application last week called TV.com.  It's been making quite a bit of noise south of the Canadian border since it's streaming full length CBS TV episodes directly on your iPhone.  TV.com is the first to market with an app like this, and it's especially good timing since Hulu recently pulled its services from Boxee and upset users are looking for alternatives.  But what does all this have to do with the great white north?

If you have a Canadian iTunes account, the TV.com app is not even available to you let alone functional and signing up for an US account is out of the question since you need to provide iTunes with a US credit card...or do you?  Here's where the magic happens.  Using the same trick I've shown listeners of the GamerWok Hour, I was able to sign up for an US iTunes account, download the TV.com app, sync it to my CANADIAN iPhone and have it stream all the available show over WiFi and 3G (not recommended but more on that later).  Follow these steps to free TV on your iPhone.

  1. Sign out of any existing iTunes account

  2. Go to the bottom of the iTunes home page and change your country to United States

  3. Go to the App Store and find TV.com (which should now show up under free apps)

  4. Click to the app and click the "Get App" button

  5. iTunes will ask you to sign in or create a new account, select create a new account

  6. Enter all the information it asks for and you can make everything up except for:

    • City, Zip Code

    • email address

  7. Use Google Maps to find a US address that's actually real, this doesn't matter but your email address needs to be a real one that you can access

  8. When you get to the payment screen, there will be all the major credit cards AND A NEW RADIO BUTTON THAT SAYS "NONE"

  9. Select "NONE" and an email will be sent to the email provided for confirmation

  10. Open the iTunes email and confirm your account

  11. Congratulations! You now have an US iTunes account without the need for a US credit card

  12. Download TV.com, sync your iPhone, and happy streaming!

Remember, this works because CBS hasn't placed IP blocking on the app yet but there's a good chance it may happen in the future, just as Hulu.com has.  So hopefully you can enjoy playing with the app for the mean time but remember to stream over WiFi.  3G and EDGE is simply not fast enough for this content yet but it will work.  3G reception should be perfect otherwise you are going to get gaps and audio issues.
