HTC Touch Diamond (Telus CDMA) Review [Mobile]

htc-touch-diamondIn December 2008, I (FatYoshi) decided to take the plunge on my first smartphone.  The Motorola Razr that I was using beforehand was the most advanced phone I owned so going to the HTC Touch Diamond wasn't baby steps; it was dinosaur steps.

Ok, I went and checked out the Diamond and the Pro yesterday at Bell. While I will miss texting while driving, I cant get over the overall size of the Pro, as well as how flimsy the pull out keyboard makes it feel. The Diamond has a more solid feel, which immediately makes any device seem better. Weight also usually makes devices seem better, but the Pro weighs like 2 lbs, so you would get a workout using it. I am seriously tempted to pick up the Diamond for $50, but if something comes out in the next few months, I will be stuck with it for at least two years, or will have to pay at least $200 to get out of my contract, or have to pay the full price for the next device without a subsidy (ouch). I think I will hold off until this summer or fall if I can make it that far without a new phone, and see what the new HTC phone Bell is getting in will be like, and by then I will know for sure when the PRE will be out/or not.

I think if you look around, you might be able to get an unlocked HTC Diamond for about $200, which would be the same for getting out of contract. There's also a rumor from state side Sprint internal mail that the Pre could launch as early as May 17th. If so, an unlocked one might not be too far behind.

I agree though, the size of the pro is quite an issue (adds bulk to your front pocket if you're into that). And the keyboard isn't anything to write home about. The Diamond is a much better choice over the two. The lack of WiFi is a bit of an issue but not a deal breaker if you're using Opera anyway.
