Star Trek (2009) Review [Movies/DVD]

I lucked out, this was actually the first Star Trek movie for me, but it has since spawned a nerd rebirth in our house as I watched all of the Original movies and TV show episodes. Star Trek is a superb reboot to a classic piece of Sci-Fi TV history, from the doppelgangers-who-can-actually-act casting to the CG that makes even a good artist want to cry. This is J.J. Abrams' masterpiece.

Abrams knew what he was doing when he cast virtual unknowns and unexpected surprises; he found a cast of people who not only looked the part, but could skillfully embody the characters they were meant to portray. Chris Pine fills William Shanter's old uniform to a degree of brilliance that just amazed me; even when he is just in the background shots, he never breaks the flow of Kirk.  Even the simplest gestures feel perfectly placed. Pine's Kirk is a very believable ladies' man. When he flashes that grin, the girls will melt - especially the green-skinned ones. Zachary Quinto, an actor who most of the world know as Sylar on Heroes, really steps up his acting skills. He has the same stern, soft-spoken quality that was and is so very Spock (and he just looks yummy in the uniform.) But the cherry on the casting cake has to be Karl Urban as Bones. I honestly thought they had cast DeForest Kelley's son, instead of Eomer from Lord of the Rings. From his surly demeanor, to being shot happy with “medicine,” Urban is by far the man meant to be Bones for this generation.

The CG in Star Trek is oh so very shiny. The Enterprise is lovingly rendered, and she looks more beautiful than ever. The guys behind the graphics of this movie deserve a medal, because everything feels so authentic it was surreal. It's a difficult thing to accomplish even once in a film, but for it to continue throughout is amazing. Being able to work as closely as they did with the Set Department, merging CG and live action without causing a bunch of breaks in realism, is a feat on its own.

The writers and Abrams have definitely been able to breathe new life into this classic. The plot of the movie is an elegant way to reboot the series without breaking continuity and to keep making movies with everyone involved. The characters are true to form, and the lines that are meant to be funny are clever and natural, especially with Bones. Urban's ability to deadpan his more unexpected lines without a hint of sarcasm will have fans rolling in the aisles.

I am a bit of a music junkie, and Sci-Fi movie scores are among my favorites. So it's a relief that I enjoyed the musical score.  Composed by the genius Michael Giacchino (The Incredibles, Alias), you can expect a very high level of excellence from Star Trek's music. It manages to inject a scene with just the right sounds to make you feel sorrow or fear, or even grip your heart in excitement. Giacchino had his work cut out when he was asked to compose the score; however, he made it look easy and I truly hope he continues his run of success in the (inevitable) upcoming sequels.

Trying to describe Star Trek without giving away a bunch of spoilers is truly hard to do - there's so many great things that happen!  But I would hate to reveal something and ruin a wonderful movie for someone. Granted, most Trek fans have already seen the film, but I'm proof that you don't need to be a fan to fall in love with the franchise. If you want a good, intelligent action flick with pretty people to stare at, this is definitely a movie see. The Special Features have a Blooper Reel to die for. Star Trek is a beautiful remake of a classic, and will surely attract new and old fans for years to come.

Pros:
  • Stunning CG

  • Excellent script

  • Top-notch casting

Cons:
  • Not enough of original cast cameo's

  • KHAN!
Score: 9/10 Love it, it's STAR TREK!!
