So everyone’s heard the “buzz” around this film for months now (even from us). People are talking about everything from the new 3D cameras, to the Na'vi alien language that was created, and the fact that it is the most expensive movie budget OF ALL TIME. And while I am always a skeptic when it comes to “internet buzz,” the difference with this one is that most of it isn’t manufactured. People are actually excited about this film.
And after seeing this film in IMAX 3D this past Saturday, I can honestly say that the buzz is justified.
So much of the talk has been about the 3D and special effects, that you’d almost expect it to have vapid characters and a non-existent story, but it’s quite the opposite. Sure, it is a very familiar plot, but I almost liked that it was just a unique way to retell an old story. And James Cameron did a great job of not letting the technology play the starring role, but it really did make you feel like you were there. Best of all, it wasn’t so much a gimmicky 3D movie, as it was a film done in 3D.
The story itself is one of Cameron’s best (possibly due to the fact that he’s been working on it since 1995). The character development is done so well that you really, really feel that “cinematic tension” when he wants you to. And the CGI work, especially the facial expressions, make the artificial characters feel just as real as the live actors. So you care what happens to them.
The only downside for me was that while the pace of the film was engaging, it did slow down a bit near the end. A kid next to me asked his Dad if it “was over yet,” more than once. So anyone that doesn’t enjoy character driven films, probably won’t see enough explosions to keep them interested for the entire 2h40m runtime. There were also a few small plot-holes that may annoy the uber-realist, but there weren’t any giant inconsistencies.
With all things considered, this film is easily the best of the year. Cameron is a visionary who has consistently pushed the technology of filmmaking, while telling some really great stories and this one has it all. Please just make sure that you see this film in IMAX 3D. It is the best experience out there and you certainly won’t feel ripped off. Now, if I still haven't convinced you to see this film, then consider this quote from Steven Spielberg who said, “The last time I came out of a movie feeling that way it was the first time I saw Star Wars.” Nuff said.
Pros:
- Immersive storyline and characters
- Amazing SFX and CGI work
- 3D at it’s absolute best
- The first of a new age of filmmaking
Cons:
- The pacing lost a bit of steam towards the end
- Some minor plot holes
Overall:
9.9 Simply amazing on almost every level
