Wok to the Future: Avatar [Movie/Games]

Sure, sure, so Hitler doesn't like the movie trailer, but he doesn't like anything. Me? I want to see this film in the worst way. I have always loved true Sci-fi films (and games) that are set in a completely foreign land. It takes you almost half the movie/game to figure out the nuances of the society and all of the dynamics at play, and for me that's the best part. The setting becomes as much of a part of the story as the characters themselves, which is also why I loved the Final Fantasy games so much.

When someone comes up with an idea for a film in 1995 and has to wait until technology catches up with their vision to make the movie, and especially when that someone is James Cameron, you can't not get excited for it. The scriptment (James Camerons coined term for a combined script & treatment document - clever he is) was leaked on the internets over a decade ago and when the news broke in 1996 that synthetic actors were going to star in the film, people couldn't believe it.  It is much more believable now, but it is still quite surprising that the movie itself has taken so long to become a reality, the thing has been in production since 2007 and that's an eternity by todays standards.

I get really excited about 3D movies these days, because it is an experience that is worthy of the movie theatre. And this one should be more realistic than anything that we've seen because of the stereoscopic 3D camera that James Cameron developed with Vince Pace. So cool.

Everything that I've seen about this movie has been epic. The budget, epic. The trailer, epic. The Stereoscopic 3D camera, epic. James Horner's score, epic. The concept art, epic. Avatar Day, epic. The Augmented Reality Toys, epic. and the video game is no different.

It was awesome to hear James Cameron talk about the game and the development process with Ubisoft (one of my favorite developers) in an interview at E3. Based on the way that he was talking, he HAS to be a gamer and you can tell that he was really impressed with the designers at Ubisoft. He even mentioned that he would consult with them before he even started making the sequel to get ideas for both the movie and the game. That's just plain awesome.

I also loved that for the limited few that have the proper technical requirements, you will actually be able to play the Avatar game in 3D (the first ever to my knowledge)!!  So if you've got a 1080p television, some 3D glasses, an HDMI-out and a copy of the Avatar game (out November 24 in North America) you'll be one of the few that will be able to take in this experience. I have a slightly older Pioneer 1080i plasma and apparently that isn't good enough, so I'll be insanely jealous of anyone that has the set-up to pull this off.

There is also a rumour that Cameron has sold the Avatar rights to a MMORPG game to Ubisoft, which could be another cool application of the storyline. All I know is that I am going to buy the game in November and count down the days until December 18th when this Christmas blockbuster hits the movie theatres.

Great summary Adam!

I'm right there with you on this one. The ambition behind this entire experience is unprecedented and only someone of Cameron's calibre can pull of the first attempt.

(The cynic inside me can't help but comment that I'm sure every movie / gaming studio is going to closely monitor this as well, with the hopes of replicating the same "broadband simultanous media" experience, of game, movie and possible MMOG)
