Windows 7:1:3

Can't I just have the Standard Version? Can't I just have the Standard Version?

Gizmodo reported this week that Microsoft announced via press conference they will be leaving behind the multitude of stickers a-la Windows Vista and going with just one for Windows 7.  This is news worthy of rejoice everywhere for lovers of the environment, think of how much less plastic waste will be discarded into the landfills every year with just one sticker to worry about!

Seriously though, this is a good move for Microsoft and goes in line with their vision of streamlining this next version of Windows.  With Windows 7 requiring less resourcesthan previous versions, there's also less of a need to differentiate the versions.  If the same OS can run on a netbook up to a gaming system, why confuse the consumer?

I'm certainly excited about this next version. The possibility of a lighter weight OS with more streamlined code should make any power user of windows rejoice.  I'm really tired of XP and the 2001 looks and functionality, and Vista with its steep requirements are certainly a chore to have on all systems.  PDC didn't provide much information on Windows 7 compared to what was already known.  One thing that's still uncertain is whether or not Microsoft will push this next version to 64-bit only.  It's really about time and this way will force developers to finally step up and code 64bit drivers that works!

The one thing that's odd about the reduction of branding stickers is they will maintain a generic Windows 7 sticker, a touch-screen Windows 7 sticker, and a Mobile Windows (7?) sticker.  So really, they are slimming down, but not by that much.  Microsoft, take my advice, cut out the fat before you die from obesity!
