Tom's Guide reported today that Apple has hired the Dean of Yale's School of Management to head up what is only being described as the Apple University. According to the report, Joel Podolny, Dean of Yale's School of Management was a tenured professor, which means that the professor has a permanent job and cannot be fired without just cause.
However, the tenure system at Yale (and Harvard) differs from other Ivy League schools. Their tenured professors are appointed and cannot be promoted from within the junior ranked professors, there are no tenure tracks at Yale (but the system is currently under review).
This basically mean that the "exciting new project" as Apple states, is more than meets the eye.
What does this University mean? Could it be something similar to McDonald's University? Or is it going to be an accredited institution of learning for the public (read: Elite)? No one is certain at this point and speculations are as wild as any other Apple rumors.
Personally I'm inclined to go with the first opinion and that this will be Apple's version of the Hamburger University. A place for them to groom their management team, provide company ideals, and put into place a realistic succession plan for the longevity of the company. This would go a long way in helping stock holders retain their faith in the company in the event of Steve Jobs leaving/dying/stepping down/transcending into a higher life-form. More to come as information becomes available.
